CHAPTER ONE: SHADOWS FALL

Kibiti was a realm of endless, vibrant green.

Viewed high from the sky, its dense forests resembled a sprawling sea of canopy stretching into the distant horizon. Ancient, towering trees stood shoulder to shoulder, their interwoven branches embracing so tightly that sunlight struggled to penetrate down to the forest floor.

Beneath that thick canopy lay exceptionally fertile earth, nourished by small streams quietly meandering toward the majestic Rufiji River.

Mornings in Kibiti carried the crisp scent of dew-kissed soil, indigenous tree bark, and a gentle breeze blowing in from the ocean.

For generations, the lives of its inhabitants followed a peaceful, rhythmic harmony free from fear.

At daybreak, mothers wrapped khangas around their waists and headed off to the fields with hoes slung over their shoulders. Farms of cassava, cashews, rice, and coconut palms formed the bedrock of their daily sustenance.

Men and young boys departed at dawn toward the river and coast, pushing long wooden canoes into the water with folded fishing nets draped over their shoulders. Children ran across open clearings, playing without a single care in the world.

When night fell, the villagers slept in undisturbed tranquility.

There was no reason to fasten doors with heavy padlocks.

No one lived in terror of a midnight knock at the door.

Peace was their impenetrable fortress.

Yet no peace endures forever.

While the people of Kibiti went about their quiet routines, darkness was slowly creeping in from afar.

A darkness no one saw coming.

A darkness no one anticipated.

And that darkness bore a name.

One night, the moon hid behind thick, heavy clouds draped across the sky.

The coastal wind howled with a strange, eerie sound, as if carrying a dire warning from distant shores.

Deep within the dense mangroves bordering the ocean, two long canoes cut silently through the water.

There were no lights.

There were no voices.

The engines had been cut long before reaching the shore.

The canoes glided over the water like phantom shadows.

One by one, men stepped onto the sand.

They wore worn, dark fatigues.

Their faces were covered in black cloth, while several had smeared charcoal across their skin.

Only their eyes gleamed in the dark.

And those were not the eyes of ordinary men.

They were the eyes of men seasoned in violence.

They moved with the stealth of a leopard stalking its prey.

Not a single word was spoken.

They communicated solely through hand gestures.

Clutched in their hands were battered, yet lethal, automatic rifles.

Some barrels were wrapped in cloth to prevent metallic glints from betraying their position in the dark.

Leading the unit was a man of terrifyingly massive stature.

He stood taller than the rest.

A long scar ran down his left cheek, extending all the way to his chin.

Anyone setting eyes on him for the first time felt an unsettling dread stir within their chest.

That man was Jabari.

Jabari stood atop a small termite mound overlooking the border village.

He gazed at the houses resting peacefully in the dark.

He observed the coconut palms swaying gently in the wind.

He surveyed the lives of people sleeping soundly, oblivious to the impending storm.

Then he drew a deep breath.

The scent of Kibiti's rich soil filled his lungs.

A chilling smile crept across his face.

Jabari: "This is where we shall build our empire."

His voice was raspy and heavy, like an iron wheel scraping against solid rock.

He looked back at his men.

Jabari: "These people still live in peace."

Jabari: "But their peace ends tonight."

No one uttered a word.

All listened in solemn silence.

Jabari: "From this day on, there will be no security."

Jabari: "There will be no peace."

Jabari: "There will be no law except ours."

One of his men nodded slowly in agreement.

Jabari continued.

Jabari: "We shall control their rivers."

Jabari: "We shall control their forests."

Jabari: "We shall control their trade."

Jabari: "And above all, we shall rule their fears."

His words summoned a heavy silence over the night.

He raised an arm, pointing toward the dense wilderness.

Jabari: "Whoever resists will die."

Jabari: "Whoever betrays us will die."

Jabari: "And whoever dares raise their head against us will be made an example for the rest."

The men surrounding him slowly raised their rifles.

Then they tapped the rifle stocks against the ground in unison.

Thud!

The muffled sound echoed through the night air, yet it was enough to seal a pact.

A blood oath.

An oath of terror.

An oath of darkness.

Jabari turned to face the dense jungle of Kibiti.

He saw it as an impenetrable fortress.

He saw it as a perfect sanctuary to hide.

He saw it as his greatest weapon.

He had no idea that far away, his destiny was already being written.

Yet for that night...

Kibiti remained asleep.

And as its inhabitants closed their eyes in peaceful rest, a looming shadow officially descended upon their land.

Their lives would never be the same again.

For this was the beginning of Operation Kibiti.
